Stories from our clients

Abraham Msofe

I have never been a very good lover of Nuts. But just a few weeks ago I tested one of the best cashew nuts I have ever had. I received them from a colleague. At first it was the packaging that intrigued me to test the cashew nuts plus the story behind the product. He said these were cashew nuts produced here in Tanzania specifically in Mkuranga region by the people of Mkuranga. It was very impressive to hear the story, and the fact that the cashew nuts were organic was a bonus on its own as not many products these days are organic and healthy. I tested the cashew nuts and fell in love with them. I had to contact the people producing the cashew nuts to make sure they really exist and give them my feedback as I was really impressed.  I also needed more of their product and to make a visit to their site as I was intrigued by the story my colleague told me. I visited Mkuranga and got to see the farmers in was part of an educational trip and also touring “food tourism” as I love discovering good food, and this to me was very good food. Well done to the WAHAPAPA team for creating such an amazing group and product.

While in Tanzania, East Africa, I noticed a premium brand of cashews in all of the local shops – "Wahapahapa Cashews". This company’s packaging is adorned with “sustainability” and “social enterprise”. Sometimes people discuss over the ethics of buying cashew nuts, because there are plenty of unscrupulous cashew factories where workers are exposed to the toxins - the raw cashew nut contains the very toxic substance in their outer shell. The term “blood cashews” has been coined and some consumers are understandably worried about the ethics of cashew nuts. So I was keen to learn more about Wahapahapa "ethical" brand. I contacted them - then it turned out, Wahapahapa is a local brand established by a cooperative, whose members are farmers selling their own cashew nuts. They were kind enough to invite me for a tour to Mkuranga, where their cashew trees are growing and where they do themselves processing of cashew nuts. It was a first time I have had such an authentic travel experience, and I learned much more than how cashew nuts growing and how they are processed – I experienced the life of farmers, for whom cashews are their natural treasure. And in fact, Wahapahapa cashew nuts are the real treasure: are most tasty cashews I ever ate!

Recently my family and I visited Mkuranga for a family visit. As usual on our way my little ones needed a healthy snack. In the beginning it was difficult to find something that I could give my children so they could seat and enjoy as we continued with the ride. Buy alas we came across the WAHAPAHAPA cashew nuts on our way. I loved the packaging in the beginning and was impressed by it. I had to ask where they get them from and was told they were cultivated there at Mkuranga by the people of Mkuranga. I was very impressed and decided to take more that I wanted to get. When I tested it the nuts they had a very earthly test that you do not get from most cashew nuts. They were organic and the presentation was amazing. And what o loved most is my children loved them and I was happy that I was giving them something tasty and nutritious at the same time. I will definitely recommend these Cashew nuts to more people and especially any one with children, as they are healthy and very well packaged.
